TRUST THE DOG,” THE NEW BOOK ABOUT THE FIDELCO GUIDE DOG FOUNDATION INC.

NAMED A “PARADE PICK” BY “PARADE MAGAZINE”

Parade Magazine is read by 74 Million People Each Week.

Bloomfield, Conn. – Parade Magazine editors have named “Trust the Dog,” the new book about the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, Inc. (Fidelco) by Viking and Author Gerri Hirshey, a “Parade Pick.” This is a coveted distinction and helps make “Trust the Dog” a must-read book for 2010. According to “Parade,” its magazine is read by more 74 million people each week.

“We’re excited that our book has received national recognition,” said Eliot D. Russman, CEO and executive director of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, Inc. “The client stories contained in “Trust the Dog” are illustrative of the thousands of lives that have been changed for the better because of the freedom and independence that our Fidelco guide dogs provide their human partners.”

Author Gerri Hirshey spent approximately two years interviewing Fidelco clients, staff and volunteers to craft “Trust the Dog.” During that time, she traveled from Florida to Toronto to see first-hand the unique human-canine bond that exists between Fidelco clients and their guide dogs. As David Bearden, a Fidelco client, told Hirshey, “I’m in a perpetual state of amazement. You just make this stuff up.”

Hirshey’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and many other publications.

Fidelco, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Bloomfield, Conn., breeds, trains and places its own, unique type of German shepherd guide dogs with people who have visual disabilities. It pioneered In-community Placement in the United States; a process that allows guide dog users to be trained in the communities where they live and work. Now in its 50th year of service, Fidelco relies solely on the gifts and the generosity of individuals, foundations, corporations and civic organizations.
